Mumbai: Rajkummar Rao has finally addressed a viral internet observation — that he’s always playing the small-town guy struggling with shaadi (marriage) in films. The National Award-winning actor, known for his versatility, laughed off the memes and theories in a recent interview, but admitted that there might be some truth to them.
From Stree to Mr & Mrs Mahi, Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video to Bhool Chuk Maaf, Rao’s characters often find themselves entangled in wedding chaos. Most of these films are set in tier-2 towns, further fuelling the running joke online that Rajkummar Rao is stuck in a cinematic “wedding multiverse”.
🗣️ Rao Reacts to the Meme Trend
“It just happened. Nothing is conscious,” Rao said with a laugh, speaking to Hindustan Times. He pointed out that his wedding woes on-screen started much earlier: “I think I have some connection with weddings because it started with Queen, where the wedding was such an important part of the plot.”
His Maalik co-star Manushi Chhillar cheekily reminded him, “In Queen, it was your character who called off the wedding.” To this, Rajkummar quipped,
“Ussi ka shraap lag gaya hai… shaadi mein hi kuch bhasad ho jaati hai. Ya toh haldi mein atak jaata hai, ya koi video bana leta hai!”
(“That must be the curse… something or the other always goes wrong at the wedding. Either I get stuck at the haldi ceremony, or someone leaks a video!”)
When asked if he plans to break the pattern, he jokingly added,
“That character from Queen needs redemption.”
🔫 Rajkummar Rao’s Next Role: A Total 180
Moving away from shaadi drama, Rao will next be seen as a ruthless gangster in Maalik, an action drama directed by Pulkit. The film also stars Manushi Chhillar and Prosenjit Chatterjee and is set to hit theatres on July 11.
With Maalik, fans will finally see Rao break free from his “wedding loop” — or will they?
