Elon Musk launches ‘American Party’ following X poll, blasts US democracy as a one-party system and vows to oppose Trump’s spending bill.
Washington DC [US], July 6 — In a bold and unexpected political move, Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Saturday (local time) announced the formation of a new political outfit — the American Party — with the stated aim to “give you your freedom back.” The announcement comes amid a growing feud between Musk and US President Donald Trump, and follows Musk’s public denouncement of what he calls a “one-party system masquerading as democracy.”
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party — and you shall have it!” Musk declared on X (formerly Twitter), referencing the results of an informal poll he had conducted on the platform. Over 65 percent of users backed the idea of him starting a new party.
He continued,
“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the American Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
Musk’s latest political statement follows his escalating criticism of the “Big Beautiful Bill,” a legislative package pushed through Congress by Trump and signed into law during a Fourth of July ceremony outside the White House. Musk has lambasted the bill, warning that its provisions will balloon the national deficit and compromise fiscal responsibility.
The rift between Musk and Trump widened after Musk began attacking Trump’s legislative agenda online, particularly singling out Republicans who supported the bill. He pledged his support to Representative Thomas Massie, a vocal critic of the legislation, and hinted that he would campaign against any GOP figure who backed Trump’s economic policies.
“I will support challengers to any Republican who voted for this bill,” Musk stated, underlining his resolve to shake up the political status quo.
While Musk’s declaration of the American Party was met with excitement by his online followers, questions remain about the movement’s organizational structure, platform, and political roadmap. As of now, the billionaire entrepreneur has yet to release a detailed plan or candidate lineup.
This is not Musk’s first foray into political discourse. Over the past few years, the SpaceX and Tesla chief has become increasingly vocal on matters of free speech, government overreach, and fiscal conservatism, often using his massive platform on X to influence public debate.
The launch of the American Party signals Musk’s intent to not just comment on the political system but to become an active participant in reshaping it.
