Karnataka To Formulate New SOP After Chinnaswamy Stadium Stampede: HM Parameshwara

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 5: Following the tragic stampede at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives and left dozens injured, Karnataka Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara visited the site and announced that the state will implement a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for future large-scale public events, including victory celebrations.

Speaking to reporters, the Home Minister stated, “The Chief Minister has already ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. I came here to see the gates where the stampede happened.” He further said that an investigation will be carried out under the supervision of the Bengaluru City District Commissioner.

Dr Parameshwara stressed that the Home Department will design a new SOP framework to ensure such tragedies do not recur. “Going forward, any large gathering or celebration must strictly follow police department guidelines. These innocent deaths are heartbreaking,” he said.

The stampede, which occurred on June 4 during Royal Challengers Bangalore’s IPL victory celebration, resulted in 11 deaths and 56 injuries. According to officials, 46 people have been discharged, while 10 are still under treatment, none with critical injuries.

The Home Minister recounted the grief of families, sharing that “a man told Vaidehi Hospital how his son, who had left for college at 6 am, never returned. It was meant to be a day of joy.” He added that while the stadium capacity is 34,000, nearly 3 lakh people gathered at the site, overwhelming the infrastructure.

Metro authorities revealed that 8.7 lakh commuters used the Bengaluru Metro between 9 am and 11 pm that day, underlining the scale of the crowd movement.

Dr Parameshwara confirmed he will soon hold a meeting with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and senior police officials to review the lapses. He also noted that Director General of Police (DGP) and Bengaluru Police Commissioner will examine all technical aspects of the incident.

The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each of the deceased’s families and assured free medical care for all the injured.
