Ludhiana (Punjab) [India], May 12: As tensions flare again along the India-Pakistan border due to repeated ceasefire violations, Defence experts and military officials on Monday underscored the urgent need for sustained dialogue at the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) level to prevent further escalation.
Defence expert DS Dhillon stressed that the demarcation of firing zones during ceasefire violations must be addressed to ensure long-term peace. “Talks at the DGMO level are vital to restore calm and uphold the ceasefire understanding,” he said.
Echoing similar sentiments, Defence Expert Sanjeev Srivastava, who heads India-Pakistan DGMO-level dialogue, emphasized the significance of Monday’s meeting. Speaking in Varanasi, he said, “This meeting is very important. The focus will be on how to continue and make the ceasefire understanding permanent. Pakistan must not provoke or violate this agreement again.”
On Sunday, DGMO Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai revealed that he had engaged with his Pakistani counterpart at 15:35 hrs on May 10, during which both sides agreed to halt cross-border firing and air intrusions starting 17:00 hrs the same day. However, Pakistan violated the agreement just hours later with renewed firing and drone intrusions, prompting a strong Indian response.
“It took only a couple of hours for Pakistan to breach the ceasefire,” said Lt Gen Ghai. “These violations were responded to robustly. Today, we sent a fresh hotline message to Pakistan warning that repeated provocations will be met with fierce counteraction.”
Ghai further noted that the Chief of Army Staff has granted full authority to field commanders to act decisively against future violations. “We’ve made our intent clear. Any further breach will not go unanswered. The Indian Armed Forces are fully prepared to face any situation thrust upon us,” he said.
As India and Pakistan are scheduled to continue DGMO-level discussions later today, military experts and political observers are closely watching whether these dialogues can lead to a durable peace or further deepen mistrust.
