Golaghat (Assam) [India], April 23: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has strongly condemned the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, calling it a tragic and reprehensible act. Speaking to the media, Sarma underscored the need for a unified and decisive national response under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
“The incident that happened yesterday in Pahalgam is very condemnable, sad. I am confident that under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, the country will respond decisively. Pakistan will be held accountable and will face the appropriate consequences,” Sarma stated.
The Chief Minister further urged vigilance against possible threats from within, emphasizing the presence of Pakistani elements inside India. He noted that the attackers allegedly targeted victims based on their religious identity.
“The terrorists asked only one question — whether they were Hindus. They did not ask about caste or community. This is a reminder that Hindus must stand united in the face of such threats,” Sarma said, referencing controversial remarks by Pakistan’s army chief as a further call for unity and awareness.
The Pahalgam terror attack is being seen as one of the most severe assaults since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. Official figures on the casualties are yet to be confirmed, but the attack has prompted a significant increase in security in the region.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the site of the attack at Baisaran Meadow and met the victims undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College in Anantnag. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also convened a high-level security review meeting with NSA Ajit Doval and senior military officials to assess the situation and coordinate counterterror efforts.
