Netflix’s Adolescence Sparks Global Dialogue On Online Influence Among Boys

Washington [US]: The British Netflix miniseries Adolescence is making waves globally—not just for its compelling storytelling but also for igniting crucial conversations about the dark influence of online spaces on young boys today.

Created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, Adolescence is a four-episode drama that explores the psychological unraveling of 13-year-old Jamie Miller, played by newcomer Owen Cooper, who is arrested for the murder of a classmate.

What makes the series stylistically unique is that each episode is filmed in a single continuous shot, pulling viewers into a real-time, unflinching emotional experience.

“My Worst Nightmare”: Owen Cooper on Watching Himself

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Owen Cooper confessed that he hasn’t watched the full series yet—largely because of how uncomfortable it feels to see himself onscreen.

“I still haven’t watched it either. I just don’t like watching myself. And now Jack says it’s going into schools… that’s my worst nightmare!” he said, half-joking.

Despite his rising fame, Cooper said he was unaware of the darker corners of the internet that the show reveals.

“I was glad I didn’t have any idea of what was going on—the emojis and the meanings behind them. I had no clue. And I don’t think my friends knew, but it’s obviously happening across the country. It’s not a made-up story.”

Stephen Graham Takes Dual Role as Creator and Onscreen Father

The show’s co-creator Stephen Graham also stars as Eddie Miller, Jamie’s conflicted father. Directed by Philip Barantini, the series delves into modern parenting, peer pressure, toxic masculinity, and digital manipulation, shedding light on the emotional and moral struggles faced by teens today.

Critical Reception and Educational Impact

Adolescence premiered on Netflix on March 13 and has received widespread critical acclaim, particularly for its performances, raw writing, and innovative direction. The series is already being considered for educational use in schools to spark conversations around digital safety and emotional well-being.
