Amit Shah: ‘No Violence In Manipur For Four Months, Situation Under Control’

Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday that there has been no violence in Manipur for the past four months, asserting that the situation is under control though not entirely satisfactory.

“For the past four months, there has been no violence in Manipur…I will not say the situation is satisfactory, but it is under control,” Shah said while addressing the House.

His statement came during the adoption of a statutory resolution confirming President’s Rule in Manipur, which was imposed on February 13, 2025, under Article 356 of the Constitution.

Manipur Under President’s Rule

  • Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned on February 8, leading to the imposition of President’s Rule on February 13.
  • The state has been grappling with ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki communities since May 3, 2023.
  • Central paramilitary forces were deployed to stabilize the situation after months of violent clashes.

Shashi Tharoor & Kanimozhi Criticize Government’s Timing

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and DMK MP Kanimozhi expressed strong disapproval over the timing of the discussion on Manipur.

🔹 Shashi Tharoor: “Why was the Manipur issue taken up at 2 AM? Manipur has a rich cultural heritage and natural resources, but the biggest crisis is the erosion of public trust in the state.”

🔹 Kanimozhi: “The opposition has been requesting discussions on Manipur for a long time, but you chose 2 AM. This shows how much regard you have for the people suffering in Manipur.”

Political Implications

  • The Congress had prepared a no-confidence motion in Manipur before the imposition of President’s Rule.
  • Amit Shah dismissed the possibility of Congress moving a no-confidence motion, stating: “Congress does not have enough MPs for it.”
  • The opposition has accused the BJP-led government of sidelining discussions on critical national issues.

Lok Sabha Adjourned After Passing Waqf Bills

After passing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025 and Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill 2024, the Lok Sabha was adjourned to meet again on April 3, 2025.

With Manipur still reeling from ethnic violence, the debate over accountability, governance, and rehabilitation measures is expected to continue in both houses of Parliament.
