Assam CM Praises Amit Shah As Lachit Barphukan Police Academy Inaugurated

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday praised Union Home Minister Amit Shah following the inauguration of the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy at Dergaon in Assam’s Golaghat district.

Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Pabitra Margherita were also present at the event.

CM Sarma highlighted that, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on SMART policing, the newly inaugurated Lachit Barphukan Police Academy will feature a weapon simulator to train personnel in real-world combat scenarios without the risks and costs of live exercises.

In his speech, CM Sarma expressed gratitude to Amit Shah for his commitment to modernizing the state’s police training infrastructure under a ₹1000 crore development initiative. “The people of Assam are extremely grateful to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his unwavering commitment to establish Dergaon’s Lachit Barphukan Police Academy as the country’s leading destination for training police personnel under a Rs 1000 crore modernisation program,” he stated.

He further called the day a historic moment for Assam Police, as this academy is named after the legendary Ahom General Lachit Barphukan after 400 years.

The Dergaon Police Academy, which has already trained 21,000 police personnel, was upgraded at a cost of ₹167 crore and now includes a Police Museum and academy building. CM Sarma announced that ₹400 crore more will be invested in the second phase to build residential quarters, a large sports complex, a CBSE school, a Nursing Academy, a Skill Training Center, and even a Police Medical College.

He also shared significant improvements in Assam’s law enforcement over the past four years:

  • Crime rate reduced by 60%
  • Chargesheet rate increased from 46% to 66%
  • Cases of atrocities against women reduced from 26,000 to 5,000

“This academy is one of its kind in the country,” the Assam CM proudly stated, emphasizing its role in strengthening police training and improving law enforcement in the state.
