UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Welcomes Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, Signs £2.26 Billion Defence Loan

London [UK], March 2: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer warmly welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to 10 Downing Street on Saturday, reaffirming the UK’s continued support for Ukraine amidst its ongoing conflict with Russia. The meeting took place just a day after Zelenskyy’s intense exchange with former US President Donald Trump at the White House.

As Zelenskyy arrived at Downing Street, crowds gathered outside in support, cheering for the Ukrainian leader. Starmer greeted him with a hug and remarked, “You’re very, very welcome here in Downing Street,” adding that the British public stands united behind Ukraine. “As you heard from the cheers on the street outside, you have full backing across the United Kingdom,” he said. “We stand with you, with Ukraine, for as long as it may take.”

Zelenskyy, visibly touched by the show of support, acknowledged the people of the UK for their unwavering solidarity from the beginning of the war. “I want to thank you, the people of the United Kingdom, for such big support,” he stated. He also expressed his gratitude to King Charles III for accepting his meeting the following day, reinforcing Ukraine’s strong partnership with the UK. “We count on your support,” he added.

The two leaders also oversaw the signing of a £2.26 billion (USD 2.84 billion) loan agreement aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s defense capabilities. The deal was signed virtually by UK Finance Minister Rachel Reeves and Ukrainian Finance Minister Sergii Marchenko. This financial support further emphasizes the UK’s steadfast commitment to aiding Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression. The loan will be repaid using profits from frozen Russian sovereign assets.

Ahead of a key European leaders’ summit on Sunday, Starmer’s office confirmed the meeting with Zelenskyy, where discussions were expected to focus on securing a just and lasting peace for Ukraine. The summit will also address the growing concerns over Europe’s defense cooperation, particularly amidst uncertainty surrounding continued US support for Ukraine and NATO.
