Delhi LG Dissolves Assembly After AAP’s Defeat, Paving Way for BJP-Led Government

Atishi resigns as Chief Minister following AAP’s election loss, BJP returns to power after 27 years

New Delhi, February 9:

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Sunday dissolved the Seventh Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, clearing the way for the formation of a new government under BJP’s leadership.

The move came after Delhi Chief Minister Atishi submitted her resignation at Raj Niwas following AAP’s defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections.

In an official order, Saxena stated:

“In exercise of the power conferred upon me by sub-section (2)(b) of section 6 of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991, I, Vinai Kumar Saxena, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, hereby dissolve the Seventh Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi with effect from February 8, 2025.”

Atishi’s Short-Lived Tenure Ends as BJP Secures Landslide Victory

Atishi, 43, took over as Delhi’s Chief Minister in September last year, following the resignation of Arvind Kejriwal. Her elevation marked a historic moment, making her the third woman CM of Delhi after Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit.

However, AAP suffered a massive electoral setback, with its seat tally plummeting from 62 to just 22 seats. Meanwhile, BJP swept the polls, winning 48 out of 70 seats—securing a two-thirds majority and bringing the party back to power in Delhi after 27 years.

Despite AAP’s overall poor performance, Atishi managed to retain the Kalkaji constituency, securing a narrow victory against BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri by 3,521 votes.

BJP’s Parvesh Verma Defeats Kejriwal in a Stunning Upset

The elections saw several high-profile defeats for AAP, including former CM Arvind Kejriwal and ex-Deputy CM Manish Sisodia. In a major political upset, BJP’s Parvesh Verma defeated Kejriwal by over 4,000 votes in the New Delhi seat, ending his decade-long stronghold.

Congress Fails to Make a Comeback

The Congress Party, which had ruled Delhi for 15 years under Sheila Dikshit, failed to win a single seat, marking its third consecutive Assembly election defeat in the national capital.

With the dissolution of the Assembly and AAP’s ouster from power, all eyes are now on BJP’s next move as they form a new government in Delhi.
