RG Kar Rape And Murder Case: BJP And CPI(M) Leaders Demand Thorough Investigation

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India]: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Samik Bhattacharya has raised concerns over the pace of proceedings in the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation to ensure all those involved are held accountable.

Speaking on Monday, Bhattacharya said, “We believe Sanjay Roy’s confession should be heard. The courts should decide the punishment, but why the haste? Abhishek Banerjee, on the first day, called for Roy to be shot or hanged immediately. Justice hurried is justice buried.”

He questioned the handling of evidence, particularly the timing of the autopsy, which was conducted after sunset, and suggested that others involved in the crime should also face capital punishment. “There is evidence against Sanjay Roy, but if others are involved, they must not be allowed to hide. The investigation should reveal the full truth,” Bhattacharya added.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya echoed similar concerns, stating that others involved in the crime have not been brought before the court. “Sanjay Roy has been found guilty because he was the only accused put on trial. The court and investigating agencies must examine his allegations and look into the possibility of a larger conspiracy,” the CPI(M) leader said.

He further claimed, “Sanjay Roy has alleged that he has been made a scapegoat. It is the court’s and the agencies’ responsibility to conduct a fresh inquiry into his claims. This case appears to involve a wider conspiracy that has not yet been investigated.”

On Saturday, the Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court found Sanjay Roy guilty of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor under Sections 64, 66, and 103/1 of BNS. According to the court, Roy assaulted and murdered the victim in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The incident, which occurred on August 9, sparked protests and public outrage. The victim, a trainee doctor, was found dead in the hospital’s seminar room, and Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital, was arrested in connection with the crime.

The court is yet to decide on the quantum of punishment for Roy, as calls for a thorough and transparent investigation continue to mount.
