Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], January 14: Actor Zahan Kapoor made his web series debut this year with the highly anticipated show Black Warrant, which premiered on Netflix on January 10, 2025. Based on true events, the series follows Sunil Gupta’s experiences as a jailer in Tihar Jail, offering a gripping look into the complexities of prison life.
While audiences have responded positively to the show’s intricate characters and intense storyline, the cast recently sat down with ANI to reflect on their experiences and the challenges of their roles.
Zahan Kapoor, who plays a pivotal character in Black Warrant, expressed his joy after the release. “Everyone is happy—my family and friends liked my work,” he shared. “It brings me great happiness to know they enjoyed it.” When asked how he selects his projects, Zahan revealed, “I’m not selective. I take whatever comes my way, and I hope this leads to more opportunities. I’d love to keep working.”
Rahul Bhat, portraying DSP Rajesh Tomar, spoke about his character’s complexities. “The audience decides whether they love or hate the character,” he said. “I played Rajesh Tomar, and that’s who he is—someone with his own struggles and philosophy on running the jail. It’s not an easy job.”
Sidhant Gupta, who plays the notorious Charles Sobhraj, discussed the psychological depth of his role. “The challenge was understanding the psychology of the character,” he explained. “Everything else followed after that. I had to find ways to have fun with it, or else it would have been too dark for me.”
Black Warrant is inspired by the real-life experiences of Sunil Gupta, a former Tihar Jail superintendent, and his journey as a jailer. The show also delves into the flaws of the prison system and how it impacts the lives of inmates, many of whom may be innocent.
Writer Satyanshu Singh shared his perspective on the story: “In my research, I realized that 80 to 90 percent of inmates are innocent. So, it’s hard to view them with hatred or anger. The system is deeply flawed, and that’s central to the narrative.”
The series is directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and Satyanshu Singh, with co-directors Ambiecka Pandit, Arkesh Ajay, and Rohin Raveendran Nair. Produced by Applause Entertainment in collaboration with Andolan Production and Confluence Media, Black Warrant is inspired by the book Black Warrant: Confessions of a Tihar Jailer by Sunil Gupta and journalist-author Sunetra Choudhury.
