New Delhi [India], January 12 : Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has launched a crowdfunding initiative for her campaign in the upcoming Kalkaji assembly elections, aiming to raise Rs 40 lakh. She assured that the funds raised will be used exclusively for her election campaign.
Atishi highlighted that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has consistently relied on public donations for its electoral expenses, refusing to accept contributions from large businesses. Reflecting on previous victories, she mentioned how AAP’s success was achieved through “small donations” from the public.
“We don’t take money from big businessmen for elections. AAP’s focus has always been on honest politics, supported by the people. I am now launching a crowdfunding campaign for Rs 40 lakh, which is essential for my election from Kalkaji. People can contribute any amount they wish,” she stated.
AAP leader Reena Gupta pointed out that Atishi, who presented a Rs 70,000 crore budget, is likely the first sitting Chief Minister in India to seek crowdfunding for an election campaign. Gupta said, “Atishi is probably the first sitting CM to seek funds from the public. We have always relied on public support for elections.”
The BJP, however, has strongly criticized the AAP-led government for alleged corruption, inefficiency in welfare schemes, and failure to tackle the growing pollution levels in Delhi. The BJP has even referred to AAP’s governance as a threat to the city, coining the term “AAPda” to highlight what they claim is the disruptive impact of AAP rule.
In response, AAP has dismissed BJP’s criticisms, calling the party the “Galli Galoch party” and accusing it of dishonest tactics and electoral fraud.
The Delhi assembly elections will be held in a single phase on February 5, with the results to be declared on February 8. The last date for filing nominations is January 17, with scrutiny taking place on January 18 and the withdrawal of candidatures by January 20.
In the 2020 assembly elections, AAP won 62 out of 70 seats, while BJP secured just 8.
