Gujarat Health Minister Issues Advisory On Common Respiratory Virus, WHO Weighs In

Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], January 10: Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel confirmed the presence of the HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) virus, which was first identified in 2001, and highlighted that it is one of several viruses affecting the respiratory system. In response, the Gujarat government has issued a public advisory.Patel addressed the media, stating, “HMPV virus was identified in 2001 and continues to circulate today. It is one of several respiratory viruses. The Gujarat government has issued an advisory accordingly.”On Thursday, the World Health Organization (WHO) provided an update on acute respiratory infections in the Northern Hemisphere, noting that infections, including those from HMPV, follow typical seasonal patterns. WHO’s report stated that the rise in infections is common during the winter season and is attributed to seasonal epidemics of respiratory pathogens such as influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), HMPV, and other viruses. Co-circulation of these viruses during the winter months can put additional strain on healthcare systems.WHO further clarified that while some cases of HMPV may lead to hospitalization due to bronchitis or pneumonia, most individuals infected with the virus experience mild symptoms akin to the common cold and recover within a few days.Union Health Minister JP Nadda reassured the public on Monday, stating that there is no cause for concern. The country’s health systems and surveillance networks are closely monitoring the situation and are ready to respond effectively to emerging health challenges. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed the detection of three HMPV cases, including two in Karnataka and one in Gujarat, as part of its ongoing surveillance efforts to track respiratory illnesses across India. Nadda emphasized that the government is keeping a close watch on the situation and that the public need not panic.
