Himachal Pradesh Government Prepares For Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), Assures Public Of Safety

The Himachal Pradesh government has rolled out directives in line with the Union Health Ministry’s advisory regarding Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) to ensure preparedness across the state.

Dhaniram Shandil, the Health and Family Welfare Minister, addressed concerns, assuring that while HMPV is a common respiratory virus, there is no imminent threat to the state. The virus primarily affects young children and the elderly. He also confirmed that there have been no reported cases of the virus in Himachal Pradesh so far.

“We have no cases of the HMPV virus in Himachal Pradesh so far, but we are fully prepared. There is no reason to panic. This is a common virus, and its impact is minimal. People should not be afraid,” said Shandil.

In line with the Union government’s guidelines, the state health department has informed healthcare institutions at all levels, from primary health centres to district hospitals, and has urged healthcare personnel, including Chief Medical Officers (CMOs), to remain vigilant.

“We are monitoring everything closely. If people exhibit symptoms or respiratory issues, appropriate measures will be taken,” the minister added.

While the state has not issued any specific guidelines on testing for HMPV, precautionary measures are being emphasised. Shandil also assured the public that the state is well-prepared.

“We have made all the preparations. Every hospital has been put on alert. If a case arises, there is no reason to worry. We are prepared to deal with any situation,” he assured.

Regarding tourists, who frequently visit Himachal Pradesh from both domestic and international locations, Shandil stated, “We are paying close attention to the influx of tourists. There is no need for panic. The state government is ready to tackle any challenge or issue that arises.”

The Himachal Pradesh government’s proactive approach highlights its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that the state remains prepared to address any health concerns efficiently.
