Biden Administration Approves USD 500 Million In Military Aid To Ukraine Ahead Of Trump’s Inauguration

The Biden administration has approved an additional USD 500 million in military aid to Ukraine, bolstering its defences as the country continues to face Russian aggression. The aid package, drawn from existing US military stockpiles, was announced by US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin during his final trip to Ramstein Air Base in Germany, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Key Elements of the Aid Package:

The package includes air defence missiles, air-to-ground munitions, F-16 support equipment, armoured bridging systems, small arms, ammunition, spare parts, and additional communications equipment. Delivered through the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA), the weapons are transferred rapidly from the US stockpiles.

Strategic Significance:

This assistance is seen as crucial to strengthening Kyiv’s defences as the Ukrainian conflict persists and ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration. This could potentially be the final military aid package under President Joe Biden’s leadership.

Defence Secretary Austin, who hosted the Ukraine Defence Contact Group—an alliance of nearly 50 nations coordinating military support for Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in February 2022—warned of the grave risks posed by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ambitions.

Austin’s Warning:

“And the stakes are still enormous—for all of our security. If Putin swallows Ukraine, his appetite will only grow. If autocrats conclude that democracies will lose their nerve, surrender their interests, and forget their principles, we will only see more land grabs,” Austin said.

“If tyrants learn that aggression pays, we will only invite even more aggression, chaos and war,” he added.

US Support to Ukraine:

Since the start of the war, the US has provided over USD 66 billion in military assistance to Ukraine. However, less than USD 4 billion of congressionally approved funding remains. The remaining aid will likely be managed by the incoming Trump administration, unless authorized before Biden’s term concludes.

This latest package marks the 74th delivery of US military equipment to Ukraine since August 2021. Previous months saw significant security assistance, including USD 1.25 billion and USD 1.22 billion worth of drawdown and security packages in December.

The Biden administration’s ongoing military aid to Ukraine underscores the US’s commitment to countering Russian aggression and stabilizing the global security environment.
