As the world eagerly anticipates the Mahakumbh Mela 2025, preparations are being made to ensure the safety of the millions of devotees expected to attend. To strengthen security at the sprawling Mela grounds, horses worth Rs 1.5 crore have been enlisted by the Patrolling Police (Mounted Police).
Five American Warmblood horses have been brought in, renowned for their ability to sense danger from a distance and ensure rapid protective action. These horses, which typically cost around Rs 1.5 crore each, have been procured at a significantly reduced price of Rs 7 lakh per horse for the Mahakumbh Mela, following coordination between the state and central governments.
Reserve Inspector of the Mounted Police, Prem Babu explained, “These horses have been brought from the Army with the communication between the state and central governments. There is a microchip in the neck of these horses that is connected to the Equestrian Federation of India (EFI), allowing us to trace their location.” The microchip also provides valuable information about the horses, including details about their ancestry, birthplace, and the name of their father. Their background information is engraved on their bodies: the front leg displays their birthplace and year, while the back thigh lists the name of their father.
In addition to the security measures, another attraction at the Mahakumbh Mela is the camel rides, operating from Qila Ghat to Sangam Nose. The camels, brought from Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, are charmingly named, with names such as Ramu, Ghanshyam, and Radheshyam gaining popularity among visitors.
The Mahakumbh is held once every 12 years, and the 2025 edition is expected to attract over 45 crore devotees. The central event is the Shahi Snan, a holy dip at the Sangam (the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers), believed to absolve sins and grant moksha (liberation).
The Mahakumbh will conclude on February 26, 2025. The major bathing rituals are scheduled for January 14 (Makar Sankranti), January 29 (Mauni Amavasya), and February 3 (Basant Panchami).
