Strong Earthquake Near Nepal-China Border Triggers Tremors in Bihar’s Sheohar District

Magnitude 7.1 Quake Followed by Aftershocks; No Reports of Damage or Casualties Yet

Patna (Bihar), January 7: Strong tremors were felt in Bihar’s Sheohar district early Tuesday morning after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck near the Nepal-China border region, according to authorities.

The earthquake, which occurred at 6:35 AM (IST), was reported at a depth of 10 kilometers, northeast of Lobuche, Nepal, as per the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) also confirmed the event in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“Notable quake, preliminary info: M 7.1 – 93 km NE of Lobuche, Nepal.”

According to the NCS, the earthquake’s epicenter was located at latitude 28.86° N and longitude 87.51° E in Xizang (Tibet Autonomous Region), near the Nepal border.

The NCS reported two more aftershocks later in the morning:

  1. Magnitude 4.7 quake at 7:02 AM IST with an epicenter at latitude 28.60° N and longitude 87.68° E, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
  2. Magnitude 4.9 quake at 7:07 AM IST with an epicenter at latitude 28.68° N and longitude 87.54° E, at a depth of 30 kilometers.

No Immediate Reports of Damage or Casualties

While the tremors were felt across Bihar’s Sheohar district, authorities have reported no damage or casualties so far. However, monitoring efforts are ongoing, and further details are awaited.

The region, located in a seismically active zone, often experiences earthquakes of varying magnitudes. Authorities continue to urge residents to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols in the event of aftershocks.
