Atul Wassan and Madan Lal Slam Australian Media for Calling Virat Kohli a ‘Clown’

Former Cricketers Condemn Disrespectful Remarks as Kohli Faces Criticism Following On-Field Aggression in Border-Gavaskar Trophy

New Delhi, December 29: Former Indian cricketers Atul Wassan and Madan Lal have strongly criticized the Australian media for referring to Virat Kohli as a “clown” during the ongoing fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The controversy erupted following an intense moment on the field when Virat Kohli’s aggressive tactics clashed with young Australian opener Sam Konstas. In an attempt to build pressure, Kohli bumped into Konstas, resulting in a brief confrontation. However, the tactic seemed to backfire as Konstas confidently struck Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah for several impressive shots, including a reverse ramp, contributing 34 runs off Bumrah’s total of 60 runs conceded.

ICC Fine and Media Backlash

For his on-field aggression, Virat Kohli was fined 20% of his match fee and received one demerit point from the International Cricket Council (ICC). The incident, however, sparked sharp criticism from the Australian media, with The West Australian newspaper labeling Kohli a “clown”—a comment that quickly went viral on social media platforms.

Cricket Fraternity Responds

Reacting to the derogatory remark, Atul Wassan said:
“You can’t expect much from them. They always do that. Our players are hard and professional.”

Meanwhile, Madan Lal also voiced his disapproval:
“It is wrong. Such hard words should not be used. Passing such comments is not good. Virat shouldn’t have done that, but the media reaction is disproportionate.”

Kohli’s Discipline at the Crease

Despite the controversy, Kohli displayed commendable discipline during his stay at the crease. He skillfully left deliveries outside the off-stump and focused on playing shots closer to his body. Facing 86 deliveries, Kohli maintained control before an unfortunate dismissal.

Kohli was eventually caught behind by Alex Carey after a lapse in concentration, departing after scoring 36 runs off 86 balls.

India’s Comeback on Day 3

Despite Kohli’s dismissal, India staged a remarkable comeback on Day 3. Young batter Nitish Kumar Reddy smashed his maiden Test century, while Washington Sundar contributed a gritty 50 off 162 deliveries. Their combined efforts guided India to 358/9, trailing by 116 runs at stumps.

Conclusion

While Virat Kohli remains a polarizing figure on the field, his commitment and discipline continue to shine. The sharp criticism from sections of the Australian media has been met with strong rebuttals from Indian cricket veterans, further fueling the heated rivalry in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. As the series progresses, cricket fans eagerly await how Kohli and Team India respond, both on and off the field.
