Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has expressed deep concern over the recent rape case in Kalyan, calling for swift judicial action and heightened societal awareness to address such crimes.
“Urgent Judicial Action Needed”
Speaking on the incident, which has sent shockwaves through the Thane district, Fadnavis remarked, “Unfortunately, these incidents are happening in society. The solution is that the judicial system should provide justice quickly and there should be awareness in society.”
Fadnavis highlighted that 95% of such crimes are perpetrated by individuals known to the victim, emphasizing that the issue transcends law enforcement and points to broader societal challenges. “There should be sensitivity towards women and girls in the society,” he added, underscoring the need for a cultural shift to prevent violence against women.
Criticism of Congress
In the same address, the Chief Minister also criticized the Congress party, accusing it of “distorting speeches” to malign national leaders. He specifically mentioned an incident where Congress allegedly shared an edited video of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on BR Ambedkar.
“Congress always fears that no one should become bigger than the Nehru-Gandhi family. That is why they always insulted Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar,” Fadnavis stated.
He accused the Congress of engaging in “cheap political tactics” and demanded an apology. “What they did with Amit Shah is the cheapness of politics because BJP, Amit Shah, and PM Modi cannot insult BR Ambedkar even in their dreams,” he asserted.
Parliamentary Disruption
Fadnavis also alleged that Congress disrupted parliamentary proceedings by politicizing the edited video. “The Congress party should first apologise for editing the statement of Home Minister Amit Shah and politicising it. They disrupted the Parliament session,” he said.
He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had exposed Congress’s history of allegedly insulting the Constitution during his recent speech in Parliament. “From Nehru to Indira, from Rajiv to Sonia, they have continuously insulted the Constitution,” Fadnavis claimed, suggesting that the Congress’s actions stemmed from frustration over PM Modi’s revelations.
Looking Ahead
The Kalyan rape case has reignited conversations about the safety of women in Maharashtra, with Fadnavis reiterating his administration’s commitment to justice and societal reform. Meanwhile, the ongoing political spat between BJP and Congress continues to intensify, highlighting the deep divides in India’s political landscape.
