Tehran [Iran]: In a significant development, Iranian authorities have lifted the ban on WhatsApp and the Google Play Store, marking a major shift in the country’s approach to internet restrictions. The decision, reported by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), signals progress toward greater internet accessibility in Iran.
The announcement followed a high-level meeting on Tuesday involving leaders from all three branches of government, ministers, and members of the Supreme Council. Discussions centered on revising policies governing internet restrictions and blockades on global platforms. After evaluating recommendations from relevant authorities, the council approved changes to relax existing bans.
Sattar Hashemi, Iran’s Minister of Information and Communications Technology, confirmed the decision on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Today, we took the first step towards lifting internet restrictions with unity and collaboration. I extend my gratitude to the President, media, and activists for their efforts. We need this solidarity more than ever. This path continues.”
The move is seen as part of the Iranian government’s broader strategy to balance regulated cyberspace governance with the reintroduction of international platforms. At the same time, it remains committed to supporting and promoting domestic digital services, according to the IRNA.
President Masoud Pezeshkian, who campaigned on promises to reduce internet restrictions, has delivered on one of his key commitments with this decision. The lifting of the ban is expected to have wide-ranging implications for individual users and businesses, potentially boosting connectivity and fostering digital innovation.
While this policy shift represents significant progress toward internet freedom, Iranian officials have reiterated their focus on prioritizing the development of local platforms alongside the gradual integration of global services like WhatsApp and Google Play.
The long-term impact of these changes on Iran’s digital economy and society remains to be seen, but the easing of restrictions is being welcomed as a critical step forward in the nation’s internet governance.
