Washington [USA], December 23: Denzel Washington, the acclaimed two-time Oscar-winning actor, has marked a significant milestone in his spiritual journey. The star of Gladiator II was baptized and received a minister’s license at the Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ, located in Harlem, New York City. The ceremony was live-streamed by the First Jurisdiction Church of God in Christ Eastern New York on Facebook.
As Washington approaches his 70th birthday next week, he expressed his joy in receiving the minister’s license, saying, “In one week, I turn 70. It took a while, but I’m here.” He also took a moment to thank his wife, Pauletta Washington, after the baptism.
The actor, who has been open about his faith, spoke candidly about the role religion plays in his life. In an interview with Esquire, he explained that although discussing religion isn’t common in Hollywood, he remains unapologetic about sharing his beliefs. He said, “I’m unafraid. I don’t care what anyone thinks. It’s not fashionable. It’s not sexy. But that doesn’t mean people in Hollywood don’t believe.”
Currently enjoying the success of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, Washington’s career continues to thrive. He also confirmed his involvement in Black Panther 3, where director Ryan Coogler has written a role specifically for him.
Looking ahead, Washington expressed his desire to work with top filmmakers and take on challenging roles, stating, “At this point in my career, I’m only interested in working with the best. I want to do things that I haven’t done.” Upcoming projects include portraying Othello, playing Hannibal, and collaborating with director Steve McQueen.
With a career spanning decades, Washington has earned two Academy Awards for his performances in Glory and Training Day. He now adds a new chapter to his life, both professionally and spiritually.
