Jadeja Optimistic About India Finding Stronger All-Rounder After Ashwin’s Retirement

Melbourne [Australia], December 21: Ravindra Jadeja, India’s star all-rounder, expressed that he would “miss” the time spent with Ravichandran Ashwin on the field, revealing that he learned of Ashwin’s international retirement only five minutes before it was publicly announced.

Jadeja and Ashwin have long been a formidable duo in Test cricket, especially on Indian soil, where their combined efforts have played a key role in India’s victories. However, their partnership came to a poignant end after the third Test against Australia in Brisbane. Ashwin, alongside captain Rohit Sharma, made a surprise announcement of his retirement from international cricket during the post-match press conference.

Speaking about the moment, Jadeja shared, “I found out about it at the last moment, almost five minutes before the press conference. We spent the whole day together, and he didn’t give me any hint. I only learned at the last minute. We all know how Ashwin’s mind works,” Jadeja chuckled while speaking to reporters in Melbourne. “He was like my on-field mentor. We’ve played together for so many years as bowling partners, passing messages during matches. I will miss all those things.”

Ashwin’s retirement leaves a significant gap, particularly in red-ball cricket. With the emergence of players like Washington Sundar, there are speculations about him potentially being Ashwin’s long-term successor.

Despite the loss, Jadeja remains optimistic about the future, emphasizing the importance of moving forward. “Hopefully, the Indian team will find a better all-rounder and bowler. It’s not like anyone is irreplaceable. Everyone eventually moves on, and new replacements come in. It’s a good opportunity for youngsters to step up,” he said.

Throughout his illustrious career, Ashwin played 106 Tests, taking 537 wickets, including 37 five-wicket hauls, and scoring 3,503 runs. His contributions to Indian cricket extend beyond his impressive statistics, solidifying his place as one of the greatest players in the nation’s cricketing history.
