Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: TMC Demands CBI To Build Strong Case To Ensure “Rapist Is Hanged”

Kolkata (West Bengal): West Bengal Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Chandrima Bhattacharya on Sunday, demanded that the Central Bureau of Investigation to build a strong case in the RG Kar rape and murder case to ensure “the rapist is hanged.”

The TMC leader was holding a protest against the rape-murder case in Kolkata. She said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had directed the party’s Mahila Congress to stage a demonstration over the incident.

Speaking to ANI, Chandrima Bhattacharya said, “On 28th August, our leader (Mamata Banerjee) had given directions to Trinamool Mahila Congress to stage a demonstration on 1st September in every block. CBI has not said a word about investigation so far, our demand is for them to tell us about the progress of the investigation and build such a case that the rapist is hanged.”

She further said that the West Bengal government has called a special session of the Assembly on September 2 and 3 to table a bill for capital punishment for perpetrators.

“There is no provision for capital punishment in Constitution…So, we are also demanding such a provision. Our Government has called a Special Session of Assembly on 2-3 September. We are bringing a Bill that will go to the President through the Governor. We believe that the President will sanction it and it will become a law,” Chandrima Bhattacharya told.

The brutal rape and murder of the trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has sparked a wave of protests in West Bengal and other parts of the country.
The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.

Doctors have been holding protests in different states demanding justice for the victim and enhanced security laws for healthcare professionals.

The incident has triggered a war of words between the BJP, with the latter demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The case has been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation from the local police following an order from the Calcutta High Court.

Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, at the hospital, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
