New Delhi [India]: In a significant move to conserve electricity, the Delhi government has mandated the use of energy-efficient appliances, including BLDC fans, 5-star rated air conditioners, and other high-efficiency devices, across all government buildings in the capital.
Chief Minister Atishi approved the proposal, which now awaits clearance from the Lieutenant Governor. This initiative is projected to reduce electricity consumption substantially, saving crores of rupees annually, according to an official release.
Highlighting the importance of the decision, Chief Minister Atishi stated:
“Our government has prioritized energy efficiency by mandating the use of BLDC fans, 5-star rated air conditioners, and other energy-efficient devices in all government buildings. This step will not only reduce electricity consumption and bills but also contribute significantly to building a greener future. Delhi’s initiative will serve as a model for the entire country, demonstrating how technological innovations and effective policies can drive energy conservation.”
She added:
“Our goal is to save electricity in government buildings through the use of energy-efficient appliances. This decision will enable us to save crores of rupees annually while contributing to environmental sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.”
Energy Costs in Delhi Government Buildings
Government buildings are among the largest electricity consumers in Delhi, utilizing over 2000 million units of electricity annually. The cost per unit ranges from Rs8.50 to Rs11.50, resulting in total annual electricity bills exceeding Rs1900 crore.
Key Features of the Initiative
- BLDC Fans: These consume 40-45 watts less power compared to conventional fans, saving approximately 96 units of electricity per fan annually. This translates to Rs950 to Rs1100 in savings per fan each year.
- 5-Star Rated Air Conditioners: These save 2800 to 3042 units of electricity annually compared to regular air conditioners, resulting in monetary savings of Rs27,000 to Rs29,000 per AC each year.
Focus on Sustainability
The initiative shifts attention from LED lighting, which is already widespread, to other significant energy consumers like fans and air conditioners. The primary goal is to address Delhi’s rising electricity demand, which reached a peak of 8656 MW this summer, up from 7438 MW last year.
By focusing on government buildings, which are major electricity consumers, this policy aims to:
- Reduce electricity demand.
- Lower costs for the government.
- Foster environmental sustainability by cutting carbon emissions.
