Leaders Reflect on India’s Historic Victory Against Pakistan as India and Bangladesh Celebrate Vijay Diwas Together
New Delhi, December 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the brave soldiers who secured India’s historic victory in the 1971 war against Pakistan, as the nation marked Vijay Diwas.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister highlighted the unwavering resolve and sacrifices of India’s armed forces, whose efforts safeguarded the nation and liberated Bangladesh (then East Pakistan).
“Today, on Vijay Diwas, we honour the courage and sacrifices of the brave soldiers who contributed to India’s historic victory in 1971. Their selfless dedication and unwavering resolve safeguarded our nation and brought glory to us. Their sacrifices will forever inspire generations and remain deeply embedded in our nation’s history,” PM Modi wrote.
Vijay Diwas: Remembering a Historic Triumph
Celebrated annually on December 16, Vijay Diwas commemorates India’s victory in the 13-day war that ended with Pakistan’s surrender and the subsequent liberation of Bangladesh. This monumental event reshaped the world map and highlighted the unparalleled valour of India’s armed forces.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also honoured the soldiers, describing the day as a “symbol of courage and valour.”
“On this day in 1971, the brave soldiers of the army not only defeated the morale of the enemies and hoisted the tricolour with pride but also brought about a historic change on the world map while protecting human values. The country will remain proud of the bravery of its warriors till eternity,” Amit Shah posted on X.
Commemorative Ceremonies
To honour the occasion, officers from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, along with their Bangladeshi counterparts, laid wreaths at the Vijay Smarak at Fort William, the Army HQ Eastern Command in Kolkata.
Eight Muktijoddhas (freedom fighters) and two serving officers from the Bangladesh Armed Forces also participated in the Vijay Diwas celebrations in Kolkata, symbolizing the enduring bond between the two nations forged during the war.

The 1971 war remains a proud chapter in India’s history, showcasing the bravery and strategic brilliance of its soldiers.
