A special discussion marking the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution is set to begin in the Lok Sabha on Friday. The debate will feature prominent leaders, including newly elected Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is expected to make her maiden speech in the House.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to open the two-day debate, which will commence at 12 noon on December 13 and conclude with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reply on the evening of December 14.
Key Participants
Over 12 BJP leaders are expected to take part in the debate, alongside members of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) such as HD Kumaraswamy, Srikant Shinde, Shambhavi Chaudhary, Rajkumar Sangwan, Jiten Ram Manjhi, Anupriya Patel, and Rajiv Ranjan Singh.
On the opposition front, leaders from the DMK, Trinamool Congress, and other parties, including TR Balu, A Raja, Kalyan Banerjee, and Mahua Moitra, are likely to contribute to the discussion.
The BJP is expected to highlight historical events like the Emergency and address “fake narratives being peddled by the opposition,” according to sources.
Party Whips Issued
Both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress have issued a three-line whip, instructing their members to ensure full attendance during the debate.
“All BJP members in Lok Sabha are hereby informed that the 75th Anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of India will be taken up in the Lok Sabha on Friday, December 13, and Saturday, December 14. Members are requested to be positively present in the House throughout both days and support the Government’s stand,” stated the official communication from the BJP.
Opposition’s View
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi stressed the need for constructive debate. Speaking to reporters, he said, “Our aim is that the House must run and discussions should happen. No matter what they say about me, we want a debate on December 13.”
He also revealed discussions with the Speaker regarding derogatory remarks made against him, stating that the Speaker had assured him these remarks would be reviewed.
Rajya Sabha Schedule
The debate in the Rajya Sabha will commence on December 16, with Home Minister Amit Shah expected to initiate the discussions.
Winter Session Update
The Winter Session of Parliament, which began on November 25, has been marked by early adjournments due to disruptions. The session will continue until December 20, with the Constitution anniversary discussion being one of its most anticipated highlights.
