Following violence in Parbhani city on December 11, the Special Inspector General of Police (Nanded), Shahaji Umap, reported on Thursday that 50 people have been arrested and 8 cases filed in connection with the incident.
The violence erupted over the alleged vandalism of a replica of the Indian Constitution, sparking stone-pelting, damage to public property, and unlawful assemblies in the city.
Police Action and Arrests
SIG Umap clarified that all arrests were made at the site of the violence rather than during subsequent combing operations. “So far, 8 cases have been registered at different police stations. We have arrested 50 people. While bringing the situation under control after the stone pelting yesterday afternoon, we nabbed these individuals,” he said.
The violence left 10 police personnel, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police, with minor injuries, all of whom are receiving medical treatment.
To ensure security, the police conducted a route march in the district and deployed State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) personnel. “As of now, the situation is normal,” Umap added.
Political Responses
Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar assured the public that law and order have been restored in Parbhani. “The situation is under control since last night,” he said.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam called for an investigation into the incident, suggesting a potential conspiracy to destabilize Maharashtra’s new government. “It should be checked if this is a deliberate attempt to defame the government. Those involved will not be spared,” he stated.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi criticized the BJP-led Mahayuti government, questioning its priorities. “There is no clarity about cabinet ministers. Violence erupted in Parbhani, and we don’t even know who the Home Minister is. Will the state government run from Delhi?” she remarked, calling for the immediate formation of the state cabinet.
Administrative Measures
Parbhani District Magistrate Raghunath Khandu Gawade appealed for peace, emphasizing that the situation is under control and additional police forces have been deployed.
The police investigation revealed that damage to shops, CCTV cameras, and hoardings occurred during the incident. The alleged vandal of the Constitution replica has been arrested but is receiving medical care after being assaulted by the mob.
Appeal for Calm
Officials urged the public to maintain peace and not to escalate the situation further. Special Inspector General Umap reiterated, “I appeal to everyone to maintain peace without giving undue importance to this incident.”
The violence in Parbhani underscores the ongoing challenges in maintaining law and order during sensitive situations, especially in a politically charged environment.
