Manipur Government Lifts Suspension Of Mobile Internet In Nine Districts

The Manipur government on Monday decided to lift the temporary suspension of mobile internet services in the nine districts of the state. An official order issued by the State Home Department confirmed the decision, following a review of the prevailing law and order situation and its potential correlation with the functioning of internet services.

“The state government, after reviewing the prevailing law and order situation and its possible correlation with the general operation of internet services, decided to lift all forms of temporary suspension of internet and data services in the territorial jurisdiction of Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, Jiribam, and Pherzawi districts of Manipur,” the order stated.

The order, issued by Commissioner (Home) N. Ashok Kumar, also urged internet users to refrain from engaging in activities that could lead to a future suspension of services. “All internet users are requested to refrain from any activities that may warrant temporary suspension of internet services in the future,” the order added.

In the meantime, on December 8, Manipur Police conducted search operations and area domination in the vulnerable areas of both hill and valley districts. They ensured the movement of 373 vehicles carrying essential items along National Highway-2, with strict security measures in place at vulnerable locations. A total of 107 Nakas/Checkpoints were set up across various districts, ensuring no detentions were made for violations.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has directed the Manipur government to submit a sealed cover report on properties that were burnt, partially burnt, looted, trespassed, or encroached upon during the violence. The report should include the names and addresses of the affected property owners and details on current occupiers. Additionally, the court has asked the government to report the actions taken against those involved in trespassing and to address the issue of funds for temporary and permanent housing, as recommended by the Justice Gita Mittal Committee.

The apex court will now hear the case concerning the ongoing violence in Manipur after January 20, 2025.
