New Delhi [India]: Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai informed the Rajya Sabha that 730 suicides were reported among personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), National Security Guard (NSG), and Assam Rifles (AR) between 2020 and 2024.
In a written reply, Rai also disclosed that during the same period, there were 47,891 voluntary retirements and 7,664 resignations across these security forces.
He addressed concerns about the well-being of personnel, stating:
“The working hours in CAPFs are generally 8-hour shifts, though this varies due to operational needs. Measures have been taken to implement a transparent, fair leave policy and regulate duty hours to ensure adequate rest and leave for personnel. The government is committed to improving working conditions and amenities, providing rest time, and peace postings for personnel.”
Boilers Bill, 2024, Passed in Rajya Sabha
Earlier, the Rajya Sabha passed the Boilers Bill, 2024, aimed at modernizing and improving the safety standards of boilers across industries.
Jaishankar Addresses India-China Relations
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar updated the Rajya Sabha on India-China relations, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace along the border as a prerequisite for bilateral progress. Acknowledging the recent challenges, he said:
“Our relationship had progressed in many domains but was negatively affected by recent events. We are clear that the maintenance of peace and tranquillity in border areas is a pre-requisite for developing ties. Discussions will focus on de-escalation and effective management of activities in border areas.”
He added that the conclusion of the disengagement phase allows India to approach other aspects of the bilateral relationship while keeping national security as a priority.
