50 Detained, Curfew Imposed For Second Day In Nagpur After Violent Clashes

Nagpur (Maharashtra) [India], March 19: Fifty individuals have been detained, and a curfew continues to be enforced for the second consecutive day across ten police district areas in Nagpur following violent clashes on March 17, according to police officials.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rahul Maknikar assured that the situation was under control and the investigation was ongoing. “We have formed 10 teams, and 50 people have been detained so far,” Maknikar told ANI.

Meanwhile, the Judicial Magistrate First Class Court (JMFC) remanded 19 accused in the Nagpur violence case to police custody until March 21. The accused were presented before the court by the Ganeshpeth police on the previous day.

Maharashtra’s Minister of State for Home, Yogesh Kadam, condemned the violence, calling the incident a very serious matter. “The incident that happened in Nagpur is very serious. Strictest action will be taken. People having the audacity to raise their hands on DCP-level officers and police personnel will not be tolerated at all,” Kadam remarked.

Kadam also addressed the issue of illegal Bangladeshi intruders in Maharashtra, stating that actions against them would be intensified. “The action against Bangladeshi intruders in Maharashtra, which has been ongoing for the last three to four years, will now be done more aggressively,” he said.

Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad appealed for peace and urged the state government to restore normalcy. “I request the people of Maharashtra to maintain peace. The state government should now try to make the situation normal. The government should stop the provocative statements coming from their leaders,” she said.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SCP) leader Rohit Pawar also called for action against those involved in the violence. “When the CM and DCM gave a statement yesterday, in which they indirectly accepted that it was an intelligence failure. If something is preplanned and the police do not know about it, then it is an intelligence failure. Either it is an intelligence failure, or if it is that they did not act even when they had the intelligence, this means they let the violence happen,” Pawar said, emphasizing that action would be taken against anyone involved, regardless of their community.
