50 Arrested In Connection With Nagpur Violence; Curfew Continues In Affected Areas

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India]: Nagpur Police have arrested 50 individuals, including seven minors, in connection with the recent violence that erupted in the city, Commissioner Ravinder Singal announced on Wednesday.

The arrests followed an investigation into the unrest, during which several CCTV cameras were damaged. Authorities are currently investigating the role of the alleged mastermind behind the violence and examining the sequence of events that led to the clashes.

“We are investigating what was the role of that person, how did he play his role from the beginning… So far, we have arrested 50 accused and 7 minors, and today also some people have been arrested,” Singal told the media.

He assured that the situation remains peaceful and that authorities are actively engaging with residents to ensure cooperation. “Our senior officers are meeting people and receiving their support. We are also reviewing how the CCTV cameras were damaged,” he added.

A curfew remains in effect for the second consecutive day across ten police district areas in Nagpur as a precautionary measure.

DCP Rahul Maknikar confirmed that 10 investigation teams have been formed to probe the incident, and further arrests are expected. “The situation is under control. The investigation is underway. We have detained 50 people so far,” Maknikar stated.

Meanwhile, the Judicial Magistrate First Class Court (JMFC) has remanded 19 accused in the Nagpur violence case to police custody until March 21. The Ganeshpeth police had presented the accused in court on Tuesday.

Maharashtra’s Minister of State for Home, Yogesh Kadam, strongly condemned the violence, calling it a “very serious matter.”

“The incident that happened in Nagpur is very serious. Strictest action will be taken. People having the audacity to raise their hands on DCP-level officers and police personnel will not be tolerated at all,” Kadam warned.

He also announced that the ongoing crackdown on illegal Bangladeshi intruders in Maharashtra will be intensified. “The action that has been going on against Bangladeshi intruders in Maharashtra for the last three to four years is going to be done more aggressively now,” Kadam stated.
