Four passengers from Rewari, Haryana, lost their lives in a tragic road accident on the Delhi-Haridwar highway late at night. One passenger is critically injured and is undergoing treatment at AIIMS Rishikesh.
The accident occurred near the Bahadarabad police station area when the car carrying the passengers collided with a stationary truck parked along the roadside. The impact of the collision was severe, leading to the immediate death of two passengers, while two others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
The deceased have been identified as Kehar Singh, Aditya, Manish, and Prakash. The injured passenger, Mahipal, remains under treatment.
Eyewitness and Official Statements
Natasha, Chief Officer of Traffic, shared details about the incident, stating that the passengers were traveling from Rewari to Dehradun via Ibrahimpur. “The driver was reportedly speeding and collided with a heavy vehicle near Ibrahimpur Cut, resulting in the deaths of four individuals. One victim is currently being treated at AIIMS,” Natasha told media.
Preliminary investigations suggest that overspeeding and an attempt to overtake another vehicle led to the fatal collision with the stationary truck. Despite the presence of overspeeding warning boards and reflectors, the accident occurred, raising questions about driver caution and adherence to safety measures.
“The National Highway (NH) team is examining the site, and nearby RLBD cameras located 500 meters from the spot will be reviewed for further insights,” Natasha added.
Observations and Suggestions by Authorities
Rashmi Pant, Additional Regional Transport Officer (ARTO), stated, “The primary reason for the accident appears to be the high speed of the vehicle. When the truck suddenly stopped, the car likely failed to notice it, resulting in the collision.”
Pant further emphasized that while visibility in the area is generally clear up to one kilometer, additional safety measures are needed. “We feel there is a need for more signage, such as ‘no stopping,’ ‘no parking,’ and accident-prone area markers on this route. Raising awareness among drivers about speed control is crucial,” she said.
The District Road Safety Committee has been urged to install boards with victim names in accident-prone zones as a sobering reminder for drivers to exercise caution.
Conclusion
The tragic incident highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, improved road safety infrastructure, and greater driver awareness to prevent such accidents in the future. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain all factors contributing to the collision.
