Jaipur (Rajasthan) [India]: Two elderly individuals who tested positive for human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Jaipur are now in stable condition, according to hospital authorities. The patients, a 70-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman with co-morbidities, were admitted to Sawai Man Singh Hospital.
In a statement on Thursday, Deepak Maheshwari, Principal of Sawai Man Singh Medical College, shared the details, saying, “There are two cases – a 70-year-old and a 50-year-old, both with co-morbidities. The condition of both patients is stable now. They have been kept in separate enclosures.” He further added, “Patients are presenting with symptoms like cold, cough, and fever, which resemble flu. As we’ve learned from the Covid-19 era, patients should continue using masks and maintain physical distancing.”
Amid rising concern about HMPV, Haryana Health Minister Arti Singh Rao reassured the public that the state is prepared to handle the situation. “We are ready. All districts have been informed to stay alert. I want to request the people to not panic. This virus can spread but it is not dangerous. It can be treated,” Rao said in her statement.
Rao also urged the public to maintain their health during the winter season, highlighting the increased risk of pneumonia. “Since it is winter now, there are chances of more people getting pneumonia. I urge everyone to get a mucus test if they have symptoms and to continue practicing hand hygiene as we did during Covid-19,” she advised.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on January 9 an increase in acute respiratory infections, including HMPV, across the Northern Hemisphere, noting that the rate of infections follows typical seasonal trends.
