A household in Manai village, preparing for a double wedding celebration, was instead plunged into mourning on Saturday, February 21, 2026. Two sisters, Shobha (25) and Vimla (23), both teachers at a private school, allegedly died by suicide just hours before their wedding processions were set to arrive.
The tragedy unfolded in the early hours of Saturday morning. After a night of traditional Bandoli ceremonies and pre-wedding rituals that lasted until midnight, the sisters retired to their room. At approximately 4:00 AM, their health suddenly deteriorated. Family members rushed them to a private hospital in Jodhpur, where they were declared dead on arrival.
Allegations of Family Pressure
While no suicide note was found at the scene, the investigation has taken a serious turn following allegations from the victims’ maternal family.
- Maternal Uncle’s Claims: Jaswant Singh, the sisters’ maternal uncle, has blamed the father’s side of the family for the tragedy. He alleged that the girls were under immense emotional stress due to marriage alliances being forced upon them.
- Rearranged Matches: Singh claimed that previous marriage alliances with grooms from Bhinmal had collapsed, and the sisters were subsequently pressured by their paternal uncle into new alliances with grooms from Pokhran against their will.
- Suspicious Symptoms: Family members noted that the bodies had turned blue, a common sign of poisoning, further supporting the police’s preliminary suspicion of toxic substance ingestion.
Police Intervention and Investigation
The incident came to light only after police received a tip-off while the family was already preparing for the funeral.
“When police received information about the incident, a team reached the spot and halted the funeral arrangements. The bodies were shifted to the mortuary for post-mortem examination,” stated ADCP (West) Roshan Meena.
The bodies were returned to the family after the autopsy, and a case of unnatural death has been registered. Police are currently questioning relatives and examining the sisters’ mobile phones to determine the exact motive behind the extreme step.
