A special flight carrying 110 Indian students evacuated from Iran is expected to land at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Wednesday night at approximately 10:15 PM.
Among the evacuees are 90 students from Jammu and Kashmir who were earlier moved to Armenia for safety. From there, the group travelled to Doha and boarded a connecting flight to New Delhi, according to the Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association.
“Iran is home to more than 4,000 Indian nationals, about half of them students,” said a government official. Many of these students are pursuing medical and professional courses, with a large number enrolled at Urmia Medical University in Iran.
Nasir Khuhami, president of the Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association, told Hindustan Times, “Ninety students from Kashmir Valley, along with others from different states, which takes the number to 110, have safely crossed into Armenia. Most of them are students of Urmia Medical University.”
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), in a statement, confirmed the evacuation and assured that the Indian Embassy in Tehran is actively supporting Indian nationals amid rising tensions in the region.
“Indian students in Tehran have been moved out of the city for reasons of safety, through arrangements made by the Embassy,” the MEA stated. “The Indian Embassy remains continuously in touch with the community with a view to extending all feasible assistance.”
The evacuation comes amid heightened conflict in the region, with safety concerns escalating for foreign nationals residing in Iran.
